In March 2026, a post on r/trustwalletcommunity drew 25 comments with this title: “Used the swap button For USDT erc20 to USDT trc20, Am I screwed?” We don’t know how that case ended, and we won’t guess. But the panic is familiar: USDT seems to “change network”, and it isn’t clear what actually happened to the money.
Short answer: USDT can’t travel from one network to another by itself. Someone takes your USDT on Ethereum and gives you USDT on Tron. That someone can be an exchange you already use, a swap service, or a provider behind your wallet’s swap button. Compare them by the amount you actually receive, the minimum, and what you need to have in place.
Is USDT ERC-20 the same as USDT TRC-20?
Same issuer (Tether), same dollar value — but separate tokens on separate networks. They have different address formats: Ethereum addresses start with 0x, Tron addresses with T. Your wallet may show both simply as “USDT”; the network label next to it is what matters.
Each network’s USDT really is its own thing. Tether has even dropped some networks: in 2025 it told holders of USDT on Omni, Kusama, SLP, EOS and Algorand that they “should redeem their holdings as soon as possible”.
Why can’t you just send ERC-20 USDT to a TRC-20 address?
Because an Ethereum transfer can only go to an Ethereum address. Apps that check the address format simply refuse — Coinbase, for example, answers with “None of your assets can be sent to this type of address”.
The dangerous case is different: networks that share the same 0x format, such as Ethereum, Arbitrum and BNB Smart Chain. There the address looks valid, and nothing stops you from picking the wrong network. Binance.US warns: “Deposits to unsupported networks, cases where the wrong network is chosen, or rejected deposits due to network incompatibility often lead to irrecoverable losses.”
What are the ways to move USDT from ERC-20 to TRC-20?
| Way | What you need | What it costs | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange account | A verified account that supports USDT on both networks | Ethereum network fee to deposit + the exchange’s TRC-20 withdrawal fee | Country availability, account checks, two transfers |
| Instant swap service | Nothing but a deposit address | The spread in the rate + network costs | Compare the final amount, not the rate; read the refund rules |
| Your wallet’s swap button | A wallet with cross-network swaps | Provider fee + network fees | Check the output network and address before you confirm |
| BayChange | A wallet or an exchange withdrawal on Ethereum | One quote: protocol fee, Tron payout cost, our fee | The Tron payout cost is fixed, so small amounts cost more per dollar |
Some real numbers to calibrate:
- Exchange withdrawal. Eco reports: “As of Oct 12, 2026, Binance lists USDT-TRC20 withdrawal at 1.5 USDT.”
- Swap services. For a neighbouring pair, USDT TRC-20 → USDT BEP-20, the monitoring site obmify listed 17 services on October 22, 2026, with rates from 1.003 to 1.01 and minimums from 80 to 500 USDT. In other words, roughly a 0.3–1% spread.
- Low minimums exist. ChangeNOW, for example, says on its USDT (TON) → USDT (TRC-20) page that “the minimum amount is as little as $2 in equivalent”.
- Tron payouts through a protocol. Swaps that pay out on Tron carry a fixed network cost: for BayChange swaps it was about 3.8 USDT in October 2026.
Which way is cheapest?
It depends on the amount and on what you already have.
- Small amount, existing exchange account: depositing on Ethereum and withdrawing on Tron is often cheapest, because a withdrawal fee like the 1.5 USDT above is a small fixed number.
- No account, or you don’t want one: a swap service. On BayChange, protocol and network costs come to around 4 USDT on a $100 swap — before our fee — and the share falls as the amount grows. Under about $100, an exchange you already use is likely cheaper; we’d rather tell you that up front.
- Either way, the Ethereum side costs gas. Sending USDT from your own Ethereum wallet needs ETH. If you have none, MetaMask explains the error you’ll see: “this means you do not have enough of the network’s native token to cover gas fees”.
What about the swap button in your wallet?
It can be convenient. Before you tap confirm, check three things on the screen:
- The coin and network you’ll receive. It should say USDT on Tron (TRC-20), not just “USDT”.
- The address it goes to. It should be a Tron address (
T…) that you control. - The amount after fees. Not the rate — the number you’ll actually get.
If a swap looks stuck, find the transaction hash (and the swap provider’s name, if your wallet shows it) before you contact anyone. And ignore strangers in comments who offer to “recover” it for a fee.
The other direction: TRC-20 to ERC-20
The same options work in reverse. One extra point: to send USDT from a Tron wallet, you need TRX for the fee. imToken compares the cost of a USDT transfer after TRON’s Proposal #104 as “Before: ~13.5 TRX After: ~6.4 TRX”.
People also ask whether to choose a fixed or a floating rate (“USDT TRC20 to ERC20……fixed rate or floating?”, r/CryptoHelp, October 2026). For USDT to USDT the price barely moves; the real question is what happens if it does. On BayChange the quote shows the expected amount and the minimum you get. If the result would fall below that minimum, the swap is refunded to your address instead of completing at a worse price.
Before you send: a checklist
- The network is named on both sides: “USDT on Ethereum” → “USDT on Tron”.
- The payout address starts with
Tand is the right one (paste it, then compare the first and last characters). - The refund address is your own Ethereum address.
- You have ETH for gas if you send from your own wallet.
- The amount is above the minimum, after any fee your app takes on the way.
- For a new recipient, a small test goes first.
At the time of writing, BayChange swaps USDT between Ethereum, Arbitrum, Solana and Tron (for Solana, see USDT Solana to TRC-20). BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20) and TON aren’t in our list yet — check the coin list for the current set. If you need USDT on Tron and start from USDT on Ethereum, the form below is ready: no sign-up, no wallet connection needed, and the fee is shown before you send.
